Elon Musk is an entrepreneur and inventor best known for co-founding Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink and The Boring Company. Additionally, he is famous for designing rockets and spacecraft capable of reaching orbit and beyond.
He has taken some preliminary steps toward turning Twitter into what he refers to as a “super app.” He envisions following in the footsteps of weChat, which started out as a messaging application.
What is Nitter?
Elon Musk is the Founder and CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink and The Boring Company. In this capacity he serves as lead designer of all rockets and spacecraft manufactured by SpaceX for use at the International Space Station and future missions to Mars or other planets. In the early 2000s he co-founded PayPal as well as Zip2, two early online payment services and maps and directions services.
Elon Musk has long championed sustainable and renewable energy sources, and was recognized by National Geographic Emerging Explorer in 2010. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Penn, as well as an MBA from Stanford. Based out of Los Angeles – @elonmusk is his Twitter handle – Elon is currently working on The Vegas Loop transport tunnel system, providing an alternative solution to Las Vegas traffic congestion.
How does Nitter work?
Nitter is an alternative to Twitter that provides a simpler, privacy-focused method of viewing tweets and searching. No login account is necessary and there’s no JavaScript tracking used in its operation – plus it supports RSS feeds of Twitter users, hashtags and searches as well as RSS feeds of RSS users, hashtags and searches! Furthermore, browser extensions exist which will redirect any Twitter link directly to Nitter for viewing.
Nitter was developed by a developer known as Zedeus and hosted on GitHub. Its primary objective is to offer users an alternative to Twitter which respects their privacy while not showing advertisements; on average it is 15 times lighter and provides pages faster (eg timelines load 2-4x faster). Soon an account system with timeline support will also be integrated, enabling you to follow people without needing to log into Twitter first.
Nitter provides some advantages, yet does have some drawbacks as well. One major downside to using it is requiring JavaScript to be enabled which leaves it open to tracking and other issues. Furthermore, Nitter doesn’t currently support some important Twitter features like direct messages or real-time search results.
One downside of Nitter is its difficult installation and configuration on one’s own machine, particularly for those without extensive technical knowledge. However, several publicly-available instances exist which can be used across various protocols including clearnet and Tor.
Even with its drawbacks, Tumblr remains an effective alternative to Twitter. Many instances are run by volunteers; there are even servers owned by Elon Musk that host some instances not directly related to Tesla but which serve as evidence of his support for EVs and space travel.
What is the best way to use Nitter?
Nitter doesn’t offer an official way of using it, but many users are taking to browser extensions and installing independent instances of it to gain access without needing Twitter’s consent. While Nitter won’t prevent Twitter from introducing algorithmic timelines or changes, it can help protect privacy by helping people avoid these updates and keep their personal lives private.
Another option would be to explore social networks that prioritize free speech and privacy, like Gab, Reddit, Diaspora or Minds. Each of these services provide a constantly updating feed with news articles, memes and other forms of content – yet have some unique features of their own that differentiate them.
These features include anonymous posting, restricting who can see your posts and filtering out specific types of content. Furthermore, they offer an independent alternative to Twitter and third-party apps, making them less susceptible to changes made there in future.
Elon Musk is the co-founder and CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company. As such, he leads all aspects of product design, engineering, global manufacturing for Tesla electric vehicles, battery products, solar energy systems, as well as overseeing development of high-speed long distance transportation with The Boring Company. In addition, he co-founded PayPal as well as actively investing in various technology companies – often advocating these causes through social media channels.
What is the future of Nitter?
Nitter is currently used mainly as a Twitter frontend; however, in the future it could evolve into an app-style solution. There remains much work to do before Nitter can become useful to most people; specifically it must support logging in, checking direct messages and following users as well as quickly loading tweets smoothly.
Nitter offers great promise, and several people have already started hosting instances of it. You can visit the Nitter website to access public instances or host your own on VPS/private server on Flux network; additionally there are browser extensions for Nitter that make using it simpler; plus it supports browsing Twitter without JavaScript which is important for privacy-minded users; it is 15x lighter than Twitter in terms of weight and can load pages faster.
Twitter is currently in an awkward spot as it seeks ways to increase revenue. Ad sales have been disappointing and its content moderation rules have come under criticism by both critics and advertisers. Musk suggested that Twitter emulate WeChat, the Chinese super-app that combines social media, messaging, payments, shopping and ride-hailing; but this would require significant investments in new infrastructure that may or may not be accepted by its market.
Even if Twitter can monetize its user base, its operations may not last very long due to a decrease in funding by its owner and his subsequent cutback of engineers at the company. If this situation continues, they might look for alternative revenue sources such as charging access for more stable and feature-rich versions of Twitter or even selling the business altogether.
