The boy reported feeling emotionally blackmailed by Schofield and felt pressured into doing what he wanted, according to court proceedings. Peter Binder, Schofield’s defence attorney, told the court that Schofield was broken prior to being arrested and suffered from mental health issues. Binder also informed them of no prior convictions by Schofield; instead he claimed his ‘wholly inappropriate relationship’ with a teenager came about due to being an isolated and lonely individual.
