World Water Day or World Water Clean Day is held annually on March 22. At the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 to 14, 1992, the United Nations passed a resolution establishing March 22 as World Water Day and it has been held annually since 1993.
The theme of World Water Day 2022 is “Groundwater.” This year’s theme aims to draw attention to the often undervalued but always important hidden water resource and its potential for sustainable development.
In addition to United Nations member countries, some non-governmental organizations dedicated to protecting clean water resources and the habitats of underwater species use World Water Day as an opportunity to focus public attention on important water issues.
World Water Day honors the importance of water and raises awareness for the 2.2 billion people who lack access to clean water. It is an action to address the global water crisis. The core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.
